“Church near me” searches and the map Google shows
When someone searches “church near me,” Google answers with a map of the churches closest to where they are standing, and on a phone three of them sit above everything else on the page. People in the United States make that search about 1,220,000 times a month, by Google’s figures read on October 13, 2026.
Searches for each kind of church
These are Google’s figures for searches in the United States, which we read on October 13, 2026 through DataForSEO, a data service that reports Google’s search counts. Each figure is the monthly average from September 2025 to August 2026. Google counts “church” and “churches” in a search as the same word, so “church near me” and “churches near me” share one figure.
| Search | Searches a month |
|---|---|
| church near me | 1,220,000 |
| baptist church near me | 90,500 |
| christian church near me | 90,500 |
| non denominational church near me | 74,000 |
| lutheran church near me | 40,500 |
| methodist church near me | 33,100 |
| presbyterian church near me | 33,100 |
| pentecostal church near me | 27,100 |
| church of christ near me | 22,200 |
| church services near me | 12,100 |
| bible church near me | 6,600 |
| reformed church near me | 6,600 |
| southern baptist church near me | 5,400 |
| church near me open now | 4,400 |
| sunday service near me | 1,300 |

Many of these searches name a kind of church, and Google uses the category on a church’s Google Business Profile to decide which churches fit them.
Christmas Eve and Easter
Searches for a holiday service come almost all in the weeks before the day. “Christmas eve service near me” had about 2,400 searches in November 2025, 90,500 in December 2025 and 320 in January 2026.
Easter follows the same pattern, and searches for “easter service near me” went from 4,400 in March 2026 to 33,100 in April 2026, the month of Easter.
A church that wants families to find its Christmas Eve service should have those times on its Google Business Profile by the start of December, as special hours for December 24.
What the search shows on a phone
On October 13, 2026 we ran “church near me” through DataForSEO as a phone search from Topeka, Kansas. The top of the page was a map with three Topeka churches. None of the 18 ordinary results under the map was about Topeka, and 13 of them were Yelp lists of churches in other towns, from Covington, Louisiana to Eagle, Idaho.
In Topeka that day, a church that was not on the map did not show up on the first page of results at all.
How Google picks the churches on the map
Google’s help page for business owners, “Tips to improve your local ranking on Google,” names three things it weighs: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well a profile matches the search, and distance is how far the church is from the person searching. Google judges prominence, meaning how well known the church is, in part from reviews and from other websites that mention it.
Distance is the reason one church shows first on one street and nowhere a mile away. When we searched Google Maps from 25 points across Topeka on the same day, 22 different churches came first, and our guide to map rankings for churches has the whole scan.
What a church can do
- Claim your church’s Google Business Profile and fill in every part of it, with the most specific category that fits, such as Baptist church. Our guide to a church’s Google Business Profile goes through it step by step.
- Keep the street address public on the profile, with the pin on the building.
- Put your service times on the profile, and add Christmas Eve and Easter as special hours each year.
- Write your service times and address as plain text on your website’s home page, which our guide to church website SEO basics covers.
- Give your church the same name, address and phone number on Apple Maps, Bing and Facebook.
- Check where your church shows from other parts of town, which a map scan does for you.
